This TN Open Tournament is over and congratulations to its sponsor - director, and all participants, it was an organized and wonderful tourney as usual.  A gracious thank you to all who help. 

There was a good cash prize from entry fees and donations.  Plenty of 15% meal discount coupons from next door Ponderosa Steakhouse,  plus support from Cracker Barrel with gift & meal certificate for 2, and everyone received a $10.00 Cracker Barrel Gold Card. 

Mr. Frank Davis opened the ty by welcoming 48 players from 15 States and three countries; US, England, and Mexico.  We had five ladies and two youth players competing in the minors division this year.  Attendance was off from last year's 56 because of the weather.  A short TN Checker Association business meeting followed.

We had discussion, a motion, a second, and voted to use Swiss pairing with only a repairing in the last two rounds.

A special memorial reverence was mentioned for Mr. Gene Lindsay of Morristown, TN who died September 6, 2007 and left 10% of his estate to Tennessee Checkers. 

A discussion, a motion, a second, and voted to leave Frank Davis as President and wife Mary, Secretary/Treasurer, Ken Christian, Vice-President, and in addition to how the Lindsay moneys would be managed. Frank was designated to consult a banker/lawyer to protect and secure the principle funds by investing it in CDs with only interest to be used for tournament expense, and reporting annually at the TN Open.  This account would require three signatures for a withdrawal and therefore protecting the funds from an individual death or a single individual withdrawal.

Other 2007 deaths were mentioned, included deceased Ralph Agee's wife Georgia, Leonard Hickman's wife Frances, Bobby Smith of Effingham, IL, Doug Hughson of  Trenton, Michigan, and Q.T. East of Oak Ridge, TN. 

It started snowing Friday night and finished with 4 inches by Saturday.

There were a least 15 wives who attended and a couple of visitors who came to visit and watch.

We congratulate Wayne Tumlin of Lilian, AL, Sam Roath, young son of Sanford Roath of Springfield, TN, Jack Dempsey of Lebanon, TN, Betty Darst of Simi Valley, CA, and Faye Harvell of Princeton, TX as first time tournament players. 

The American Best Value Inn & Suite, in Lebanon has a nice well lighted playing room, a great continental breakfast, pool & exercise room, and clean rooms.  They even showed their appreciation this tournament by providing a catered pizza party Friday afternoon for all the checker players. 

A gracious thank you to Otis & Vonda Jones, for the delicious cakes, plenty of food, and drinks.  Jim Poland brought in a variety of  "L.L. Bean" nuts and Vonda and Deb kept thinks lively as usual...  building a snowman and giving a certain player "snowball points"  Sunday morning service was held by Larry Pollard.

Dr. John Webster of Stoneville, NC won the 2008 Tennessee Open Checker Tournament,  Larry Keen of Halls, TN is the New 2008 Tennessee State Champion.  Jan Bulstra or Cornelius, NC is the Majors Champion, Harvey Powell of Hendersonville, TN won the Minors Championship. Irma Sierra of Guadalajara, Jal. Mexico is the 2008 TN Open Women's Champion, and Vonda Jones of Talbott, TN is the 2008 Tennessee State Women's Champion.  Alex Holmes of Fort Knox, KY is the 2008 TN Open Youth Champion and Sam Roath of Springfield, TN is the 2008 TN State Youth Champion.
